The term NOx represents several forms of nitrogen oxides such as NO (nitric oxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) and N2O (nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas). In a gasoline engine, NO is the most common form of NOx at around 93%, while NO2 is around 5% and the rest is N2O. There are other forms of NOx such as N2O4 (the dimer of NO2), which only exists at lower temperatures, and N2O5, for example. NOx Sensor Operation Get the Amazon Printed Books: 🤍 Get the Android Book-APP: 🤍 Get the Kindle Book: 🤍 NOx sensors represent state of the art technology that is applied to gasoline lean burn engines, as part of an engine control and diagnostic system, used to insure proper operation of the NOx emission control system. These sensors can be incorporated, independent of the NOx emission control technology used on the vehicle, and their function is primarily to monitor the NOx conversion efficiency and regeneration of the catalyst material. The sensors can work as part of a feedback to the ECM, and to make real time adjustments to the NOx regeneration using a momentary 3 to 10 seconds rich mixture. The principle of operation of the NOx sensor is based on proven solid state technology developed for oxygen or wide-band sensors. The dual chamber zirconium sensing element and electro-chemical pumps, work in conjunction with precious metals electrodes, to control the oxygen concentration within the sensor chambers and then convert the NOx to nitrogen. The sensor sends an output voltage signal that is directly proportional to the NOx concentration. The NOx sensor can be incorporated upstream and downstream of the catalyst, to provide a feedback control loop to the ECM, indicative of the ... Get the whole story right here in this video... #NOx #sensor #Nitrogen_oxides How to tell if you have a bad NOX sensor NOX sensors or simply Nox sensors are components used in measuring and calculating the amount of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. The amount of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas shows whether there is adequate oxygen during the combustion process. Just like other car parts and sensors, NOx can also fail. The sensor is located on the exhaust system right before the catalytic converter. Once the NOx sensor starts failing, here are some faulty NOx sensor symptoms you must watch out for. 1. Check engine light Illumination The Nox sensor can trigger an engine check light when it goes bad. Diagnose the vehicle with a diagnostics scan tool to track the actual cause of the light. If you don’t have this tool, drive down to a mechanic garage for a professional inspection. 2. HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION High fuel consumption is one of the symptoms of NOx sensor failure. Without the sensor sending information to the engine, the engine management system can’t tell how the engine works in terms of fuel mixture and air-to-fuel ratio. The bad NOx sensor is unable to deliver accurate information to the car’s ECU regarding the air-fuel mixture and this can result in more fuel being injected into the cylinders. 3. ENGINE MISFIRE There could be several reasons that can cause an engine to misfire; however, A sudden misfire may be due to a faulty NOx sensor. This happens when there’s little oxygen during the combustion process. When the NOx sensor has failed, the ECU can no longer determine how much fuel the injectors should spray inside the chamber. 4. SOOT BUILDUP A malfunctioned NOx sensor can cause higher gas emissions which ultimately damages the catalysts and reduces its ability to manage the emission of harmful gasses. This also results in soot buildup which becomes difficult to remove without changing the complete system and also will lead to a failed emission test. 5. Rough or Unstable idle & Engine stalling One of the common engine problems caused by bad NOx sensors is rough or erratic idling. The engine Starts and then stalls out or has difficulty staying started . 6. UNEVEN ACCELERATION Uneven or erratic acceleration is another symptom that might indicate a damaged NOx sensor. This is because the motor will use additional fuel to compensate for insufficient sensors readings. In turn, your car accelerates unevenly and causes jerking when you press on the gas pedal. How does a nitrogen Oxide Sensor work? Inside every catalytic converter are microscopic honeycomb structures coated with precious metals like palladium or platinum, which act as filters for certain gases, including nitrogen oxides (NOx). Like any filter, these materials eventually get clogged up with contaminants over time. This happens faster when you drive in stop start traffic with constant cycling of the engine on and off. The NOx sensor constantly measures how much oxygen is being let through by the converter so that the computer can adjust the air to fuel ratio to keep emissions as clean as possible. In short, it’s a very important part of a car’s self-diagnostics system. Several symptoms indicate your NOx sensor may be faulty. Some of these include the following: hard start or rough idle, high fuel consumption rates, misfires, stalling, and uneven acceleration with no apparent cause. If you notice any of these problems, have your vehicle checked for codes related to your NOX sensor by a mechanic. You can try cleaning your NOx sensor as a temporary repair with a fuel injector cleaner, If your vehicle continues to run a rich fuel mixture, then the NOx sensor requires replacement. For each sensor we'll be explaining what it does, how does it do it, where is the sensor location and what happens if the sensor goes bad. There's also OBD2 error codes for all the sensors. Stuff like P0335, P0118, P0131, P0340, P0300, P0102, P0113. So the next time you have a problem with one of your sensors you will know what's happening, why is it happening, where is the sensor and what will happen if you don't fix it. To make the video as simple and as logical I have grouped the sensor into 5 categories. 1. Position sensors (crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, throttle position sensor) 2. Air flow sensors (mass air flow sensor MAF, vane air flow meter) 3. Pressure sensors (MAP or manifold absolute pressure sensor, oil pressure sensor, fuel pressure sensor) 4. Temperature sensors (IAT or intake air temperature sensor, coolant temperature sensor, fuel temperature sensor, oil temperature sensor) 5. Air fuel ratios, emissions and others (oxygen 02 sensor both wide band and narrow band, egt or exhaust gas temperature sensor, nitrogen oxide or nox sensor for SCR selective catalyst reduction and the knock sensor) We'll see how each sensor communicated with the ECU and how each sensor is a piece of the puzzle. When they all work together correctly the ECU gets to see the big picture and accurately and efficiently manage the operation of the engine. For example the crankshaft position sensor tells the ECU where the piston is so the ECU knows WHEN to inject the fuel. Air flow sensors like the Mass air flow sensor or the map sensor tell the ECU how much air is coming into the engine so the ECU knows HOW MUCH fuel to inject. The throttle position sensor and the intake air temperature sensor tell the ECU the load placed on the engine and the intake air temp which further improves the accuracy of the injection. The final stream of information necessary for injection accuracy comes from the fuel pressure sensor which lets the ECU calculate exactly how long it needs to keep the injectors open in order to deliver the precise quantity of fuel needed. In case something does go wrong we have the life saver sensors like the knock or oil pressure sensors. The knock sensor listens for knock or abnormal combustion and if it detects it it warns the ECU and the ECU in a matter of milliseconds retards ignition timing and/or adds fuel to prevent knock from occurring again. The oil pressure and oil temperature sensors make sure that the engine oil, the lifeblood of the engine, is within functional parameters. As soon as it even briefly drifts out of expected values the ECU can protect the engine and warn the driver. All in all modern cars are a moving world of information where a large number of sensors rapidly provides endless amounts of data that gets interpreted at lightning speeds by the ECU where it triggers a sea of different actions that keep you moving smoothly and safely along the road all while preserving efficiency and minimizing emissions. NOx Sensor Working Principle The nitrogen oxide sensor, also referred to as the NOx sensor, consists of a sensor and the associated control unit. The two parts cannot be separated. The control unit of the nitrogen oxide sensor, communicates with the engine management system across a CAN network, or controller area network. In early GDI systems, the NOx sensor didn't necessarily have a control box attached to it. However, when it comes to NOx sensors, there are very few manufacturers dedicated to making them. Most NOx sensors are made by NGK Continental, with NGK making the sensor itself and Continental doing the electronic control module. This sensor is also called the Uni-NOx sensor by V D O for European cars. The NOx sensor, as mentioned before, is sold as a stand alone unit with the control box attached to the sensor. What is a NOx sensor? NOx is the abbreviation for nitrogen oxide. A NOx sensor is located behind the catalytic converter in the exhaust of a car. The sensor measures the amount of nitrogen in the exhaust gases after they have been in the catalytic converter. The main function of a NOx sensor is to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions. A NOx sensor separates the nitrogen and oxygen in the exhaust through a catalytically active electrode. The oxygen is measured in the same way as for example a lambda sensor. Placing a NOx sensor in your car ensures that the nitrogen gases are stored, measured and converted into less harmful substances.
